The other day I visited The Diplomat Beach Resort at Hollywood Beach, Fl. I want to start from the end of ichy Diplomat journey, as it was most memorable and delicious of it’s part. It was my recent dinner at newly open Monkitail restaurant, Michael Schulson’s modern izakaya and sushi bar. The grand opening was just a few weeks ago, so I was interested to get to know and try what they have to offer.

Being a seafood person myself I was very pleased with big and quality variety of fish and seafood related dishes Monkitail has. Dinner started with a cold authentic Japanese sake and robatayaki appetizers, that are very tasty and perfectly seasoned.

As to the main course we chose sea-bass and scallops, they both deserve special attention! Both are super tender, melts in your mouth and are cooked just the right, authentic way.

Left: Broiled Seabass with Truffle Soy and Pea shoot
Right: Aged NY Strip with Hon Shimeji, Ponzu, Herbs
Robatayaki: Scallop, Lobster Claw, Octopus, Salmon Scallion
Dewatsuru Kimoto Jumai Sake

Tempura Shrimp Taco with Pickled Daikon, Cucumber, Radish

Japanese Scallop with Onion Ponzu and Jalapeño

Later we tried salmon, tuna and scallops nigiri from the big sushi menu, which were all very fresh. Dim lights of the interior gives a certain mystique to Monkitail and feels cosy. Apogee of the evening was the lucky chance to meet the Chef, Michael Schulson, and personally thank him for his true talent and creativity. Great food experience indeed.

My next stop was at Point Royal, American Restaurant & Bar by Geoffrey Zakarian that is located just in front of the Monkitail. It has a very welcoming, bright interior just perfect for the lunches. Menu has big variety of local, US and Canadian fish and seafood.

If you are looking for a place for a business meeting they can offer a private room that can serve up to 12 person. My hint for wine lovers, Point Royal has one of the largest wine lists on property.

Serving as an extension of Point Royal, Counter Point is the place for specialty drinks, smoothies, coffee and a daily selection of house baked pastries, salads and sandwiches with wine or beer.

Third restaurant worth considering while chasing your next dinner spot in Hallandale area is one and only Diplomat Prime. It’s a truly luxury steakhouse, with classic interior and unique menu of prime beef aged in-house, seasonal seafood dishes, and select delicatessen variety.

Also on the Diplomat premises you can find Playa and Hotel Bar, pool and indoor-outdoor bars serving different snacks and fresh juice based cocktails from famous hotel bars around the world and from famous local bartenders in the South Florida. Great place to chill while looking at the Ocean and enjoying fresh juice cocktail.

One more food related zone that I want to mention is The Canteen. It’s located in the right wing of the lobby and offer food and beverage items for hotel guests. Beer and wine, chips, nuts and other snacks, prepared food, cookies and sweets – anything you can imagine are available.

Located at The Diplomat Landing, just across the street from the Main Diplomat building you can spot two more food gems, Portico and Bristol’s Burgers. They both are conveniently accessible through small bridge over the road.

Sharing beautiful canal views, Portico’s guests can entertain with outdoor games like corn hole or ping-pong. Bristol’s Burgers menu features great selection of starters, house made milkshakes and ice cream and of course super tasty burgers that will satisfy even most sophisticated burger lovers from Broward County. $5 Happy Hour menu is available daily from 5pm-7pm. Every Friday and Saturday 7pm-10pm you can enjoy Sunset Sessions (Live Music Concert Series – free admission).
